Challenge
In 2023, as AI rapidly emerged as the hottest topic in tech, few companies had a clear vision for how to design meaningful user experiences around generative AI. Interfaces were undefined, and users had little sense of what to expect. It was truly a “wild west” moment — and a rare opportunity to shape new patterns from the ground up.
During this time, I led the UX and UI design for the generative video and deck creation features, and also oversaw the visual design for the image creation feature — both available in Google Vids and Google Slides. The challenge was clear: how do we make a powerful but unfamiliar capability feel approachable, guided, and trustworthy for everyday users, while adapting to an ever-evolving technology landscape?
Approach
As both the visual and UX designer on this effort, I owned the creative direction for how users would interact with generative AI within Google Vids and Slides. My approach was to design a progressive, guided interface that helped users take one step at a time, while introducing the iterative nature of AI. I created high-level frameworks first, then worked closely with researchers and engineers to refine details through rapid prototyping and feedback loops.
Because this was uncharted territory, my role required blending disciplines — setting the visual tone, shaping interaction models, and building a cohesive system that made AI feel both powerful and approachable. I pushed beyond static UI patterns to establish new conventions specifically for generative media, defining how prompts, iterations, and outputs should flow in a way that felt natural within Google’s ecosystem.
Result
The result was a generative AI workflow that dramatically lowered the barrier to creating videos. Instead of starting from a blank canvas, users could enter a prompt, upload slides or documents, and instantly receive a video that was 80% complete. From there, they could refine the story and personalize content — turning what was once a daunting process into an accessible one.
User response was overwhelmingly positive: testing showed over 90% satisfaction, with participants saying the AI-generated starting point made video creation much easier, faster, and more inspiring. This work not only accelerated the adoption of Google Vids, but also helped establish new interaction models for generative AI at Google, setting the stage for future AI-powered creativity across the Workspace suite.
